In the legends of ancient Greece there were nine muses, the daughters of Zeus himself and Mnemosyne, the personification of memory. Believed to be the source of all knowledge, the muses provided the inspiration not only for music, but also science, geography, mathematics, philosophy and art.
The word music is derived from their name, specifically “mouske” which related to performed metrical speech or poetry. In the ancient world there was no distinction between that of poetry and music.
